Barbara walks across the field. The field swings with corn.
She examines the plant, which kernels carry a complex code: purple, yellow, brown and dots. Barbara understands that the dots are retreated color, a change, a decision to do otherwise.
Barbara acts otherwise. Barbara sees otherwise. She understands the pattern, although she doesn’t know how. She proceeds inevitably because there is no alternative.
Barbara sees into the future and into the past, and nobody understands what she is trying to say.
Barbara looks into the microscope and steps into the chromosome’s scale
Barbara loves, not a person but knowledge.
Loves the plant, the chromosome, the inexplicable, solving the impossible.
Barbara is a primate.
She does not have a tail.
Instead: large brain, small face and tools.
Barbara moves with two feet.
Barbara runs.
This is Barbara.
This is a beginning.
I am a protist.
Unicellular, multicellular and oh, a water creature.
Swimming as a fish in the Cambrian sea. Splashing my tail through the
currents, through decades, centuries, millennia, billions of years, enjoying my aquatic body, the streaming the flowing. Until I feel a need to change. To grow. To figure out a new direction for my life. To start anew. So I land and mutate.
I grow legs and arms and lungs. I grow hair and eyelids. I grow a mesh of
muscles to support my inner organs and skin that copes with dryness, and air.
I grow a thumb to hold on to things. I grab a branch, a spear, a pen, a spoon.
I carve a flute out of a bird bone to mimic the bird’s song. I bind beads
into my hair.
I learn new skills, but I loose the tail. It truncates and vanishes, leaving a shadow like stain in my memory.
I falter.
I press the button on the screen with my thumb to start the video.
A compilation of lemurs, spider monkeys, silk monkeys, gibbons swinging their bodies from branch to branch. I am delighted. I am entertained until
I’m bored.
I move on.
I press my thumb deep into the soil and swallow a capsule of chlorophyll. I grow my skin thin and start to photosynthesize. I make space between my cells for the mycorrhiza to enter and allow the life stream through. I eat light and the minerals from the soil.
I talk with plants.
I set myself in the planetary scale and sense all times - past and future - at once.
